About burpees
The Compendium names burpees in two different places, and which one applies to you depends on how you do them. Grind them out on a Tabata clock and you are in code 02214 at 11.0 METs, one of the highest ratings in the whole conditioning section. Fold them into a circuit alongside pushups and jumping jacks and you are at 7.5. The headline number here uses the interval rating, so read it as calories per minute of actual work, not per minute of standing over your knees deciding whether to do another set.

Tips for Burpees
- Chest to the floor and hips through at the top, a half rep is a different exercise with a different number attached
- Step back instead of jumping back once your form goes, the slower version still counts
- Set a clock rather than a rep target, the calorie maths runs on time and not on reps
- Land soft with your weight over your palms, the jump down is where wrists get hurt
